Au cours des Années folles, où la littérature sportive atteint son apogée et où les championnes et aventurières en tout genre connaissent une popularité sans précédent, la figure de la sportive trouve sa place dans le champ littéraire. Nombreux sont les écrivains, en particulier les romanciers populaires, à s’intéresser à ces jeunes intrépides qui foulent la piste, mettent les gants de boxe, chaussent les crampons ou bourlinguent en Méditerranée. Ils n’hésitent pas à décrire des personnages romanesques hauts en couleur, en ayant à leur égard un sentiment d’admiration pour leur démonstration d’indépendance. En marge des critiques médicales, morales ou pédagogiques, ils participent dès lors à l’évolution des mentalités et révèlent, entre réalité et fiction, éloge et parodie, illustration et revendication, l’existence d’une nouvelle féminité.

Walter Benjamin écrit : « Nous sommes devenus très pauvres en expériences du seuil. L’endormissement est peut-être la seule qui nous soit restée (mais avec le réveil aussi) ». Cet essai explore quelques expériences du seuil : états intermédiaires ou flottants de la conscience, vastes espaces du sommeil et du rêve, qui témoignent qu’une autre pensée est à l’oeuvre, libérée de l’impératif de la veille, et qui pourtant relève toujours d’une aventure de la conscience. The enigmatic nature of Mallarmé's works disconcerted his first readers and they were published at a period when the number of newspaper and periodicals was rapidly increasing. In the last quarter of the 19th century many comments on his writings appeared in print, some were laudatory, others claimed that he wished to found a poetic School of the Unintelligible. Today's reader will find gathered here reviews published when individual works first appeared and critical texts on his work in general. Among the aspects of his influence on his contemporaries which have been little known hitherto are the reactions of those who heard the first performances of Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun in 1894 and 1895, and the use that was made of Mallarmé's name in aesthetic and political polemics at the time, associating him with Odilon Redon or Émile Zola. Some of his utterances made at the celebrated Mardis are also recorded here.

Du roman au théâtre : avec le temps, les écrits de Jean Genet deviennent de plus en plus théâtraux, les dialogues, presque totalement absents dans son premier roman, prennent de la vigueur au point de réduire la narration aux didascalies. Il réécrit sans cesse ses textes. Mais Genet devient un « poète de la scène » plus qu’un simple dramaturge, il fait voler en éclats la scène traditionnelle et, à travers une utilisation particulière du langage, son théâtre devient une machine de guerre contre le théâtre institutionnel. Ce poète est également un engagé éthique, prenant parti pour la cause palestinienne. Toujours sous le contrôle de son créateur, cette œuvre en perpétuel remaniement, tout à la fois autobiographique et politique, interpelle au plus intime d’eux-mêmes lecteurs et spectateurs par la force subversive que, dans ses éclats lyriques, elle met en jeu.

Many early novels were cosmopolitan books, read from London to Leipzig and beyond, available in nearly simultaneous translations into French, English, German, and other European languages. In Novel Translations, Bethany Wiggins charts just one of the paths by which newness-in its avatars as fashion, novelties, and the novel-entered the European world in the decades around 1700. As readers across Europe snapped up novels, they domesticated the genre. Across borders, the novel lent readers everywhere a suggestion of sophistication, a familiarity with circumstances beyond their local ken. Into the eighteenth century, the modern German novel was not German at all; rather, it was French, as suggested by Germans' usage of the French word Roman to describe a wide variety of genres: pastoral romances, war and travel chronicles, heroic narratives, and courtly fictions. Carried in large part on the coattails of the Huguenot diaspora, these romans, nouvelles, amours secrets, histoires galantes, and histories scandaleuses shaped German literary culture to a previously unrecognized extent. Wiggin contends that this French chapter in the German novel's history began to draw to a close only in the 1720's, more than sixty years after the word first migrated into German. Only gradually did the Roman go native; it remained laden with the baggage from its "French" origins even into the nineteenth century.
